Two places, one site
The history of Verviers has been woven with two main threads: that of wool and that of water… The city of Verviers dedicated two superbly renovated buildings to preserve its collective history: the CTLM and the House of water. Yet these two buildings are two sides of one and the same history, and it seemed both logical and obvious to us to bring them together virtually on this site. Between Verviers and wool, there is indeed a long love story. Wool is the reason for the apparition of mills and factories. And it was wool that attracted businesses and labour and made the city grow. Wool was also what spread Verviers’s name to the four corners of the world. The CTLM pays tribute to the know-how of artisans and workers, and to the boldness of entrepreneurs that made this beautiful story possible. But there would be no beautiful fabrics or cloths without the Vesdre and its influents, which must move tonnes of water to treat the wool. The visit created by the House of water puts water back into the centre of life. The life of a region where past prosperity (wool) and future projects flow through a river: the Vesdre. The river enables people to discover a region, its history and residents, as well as their activities, all while emphasising the importance of a natural resource, an asset for Wallonia and a major building block for the future. It touches on the dynamics of a region and its reconversion and inspires people to participate in future projects.
